MERV 13 vs MERV 11: which one should you actually buy?
MERV is the standardized scale for how well a filter captures particles. The higher the number, the smaller the particles it traps — but at a real-world cost to airflow.
MERV 11 captures particles down to about 1 micron — pollen, mold spores, pet dander, dust mites. It's the everyday sweet spot for most homes.
MERV 13 reaches into the sub-micron range — smoke, bacteria, virus carriers. Recommended if anyone in the home has allergies, asthma, or you live near wildfire-prone areas.
The catch: MERV 13 is denser. On 1-inch HVAC returns with marginal airflow it can stress your blower. If your system is older, MERV 11 + an extra change cycle is often the smarter call.
