What Is the Aprilaire 213, and Is a Generic Equivalent Worth It?
The Aprilaire 213 is a 20x25x4 MERV 13 media filter, and it's the single most popular 4-inch filter in American homes. If you have an Aprilaire 2210, 1210, 4200, or Space-Gard 2200 cabinet, this is the OEM. Generic equivalents are 30-50% cheaper — but is the cabinet fit close enough?
What the 213 actually is
The 213 is an Aprilaire-branded 20x25x4 MERV 13 pleated media filter on a metal-edged cardboard frame. It's rated for 12 months in a single-family home and built specifically for the Aprilaire 2210, 1210, 4200, and the older Space-Gard 2200 air-cleaner cabinets.
The "213" model number refers to the cabinet family (2-series, MERV 13) — not the size. There's a 210 (MERV 11, same size), a 410/413 (16x28x6 for 4400-series cabinets), and a 310/313 (20x20x4 for the 3-series cabinets).
What fits the same cabinet
- Aprilaire 213 (OEM, MERV 13) — the original
- Aprilaire 210 (OEM, MERV 11) — easier on the blower, same fit
- Aprilaire 201 (OEM, MERV 10) — minimum spec, only if your blower struggles
- Aprilaire 413 — NOTE: this is 16x28x6, NOT a drop-in for the 213 cabinet
- Nordic Pure 20x25x4 MERV 13 — same size, ~40% cheaper, fits well
- FilterBuy 20x25x4 MERV 13 — similar tradeoff
- Aerostar Allergen Reduction MERV 13 — slightly looser fit, MERV-equivalent media
When to stick with OEM
Stick with the genuine Aprilaire 213 if you can't reliably remember to change the filter on schedule. The OEM has a slightly tighter cabinet seal, so bypass air around the filter is minimal. A filter that sits 14 months instead of 12 won't ruin your air quality with OEM; with a generic, the looser seal compounds the problem.
When generics make sense
Generic 20x25x4 MERV 13 filters fit fine for most households — especially if you change on schedule. Annual cost drops from ~$50 to ~$30. Stack a Filtermap reminder on top and you've solved both the price problem and the timing problem.
What about MERV 11 instead?
The Aprilaire 210 (MERV 11) is the same size and cabinet fit, ~$10 cheaper, and easier on the blower. If your HVAC is older or you don't have allergies, MERV 11 is the smarter buy. MERV 13 is meaningful for allergy/asthma households and wildfire areas; MERV 11 is fine for everyone else.
